Databases

During the first and second votes of the Presidential election, the NeoFluxo system collected data from official sources and specific terms on Twitter. These were organized in different databases, all accessible through an API, which allows any developer to create and visualize possible relationships between them.

Data collected from the Official Channels:

- All updates from the official channels of candidates Dilma Rouseff and Jose Serra on the Internet, from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and the official websites (no filter):

:: First vote: between 09/11/2010 and 10/03/2010
:: Second vote: between 10/08/2010 and 10/29/2010

- All updates from the official channels of candidate Marina Silva on the Internet, from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and the official website (no filter);

:: First vote: between 09/23/2010 and 10/03/2010

Data collected only on Twitter:

- All messages on Twitter containing the words "Dilma" and "Serra" (separate tables).

:: First vote: between 09/11/2010 and 10/03/2010
:: Second vote: between 10/08/2010 and 10/29/2010

- All messages on Twitter containing one or more of the keywords (automatically generated) from official channels of candidates Dilma Rousseff and Jose Serra. The tables, separated for each candidate, contain sub-tables divided by day (the same day of the TV shows), where each of these sub-tables has 10 (ten) related keywords.

:: First vote: between 09/11/2010 and 10/03/2010
:: Second vote: between 10/08/2010 and 10/29/2010

- All messages on Twitter containing one or more of the keywords (automatically generated) from official channels of candidate Marina Silva. The tables contain sub-tables divided by day (the same day of the TV shows), where each of these sub-tables has 10 (ten) related keywords.

:: First vote: between 09/23/2010 and 10/03/2010

- All messages on Twitter containing one or more keywords (generated manually by the researchers based on the TV shows) from candidates Dilma Roussef and Jose Serra. The tables, separated by candidate, contain sub-tables divided by day (created after each broadcast), where each of these sub-tables has 10 (ten) related keywords according to a previously defined methodology.

:: First vote: between 09/11/2010 and 10/03/2010
:: Second vote: between 10/08/2010 and 10/29/2010

- All messages on Twitter containing one or more keywords (generated manually by the researchers based on the TV programs) from candidate Marina Silva. The table contain sub-tables divided by day (created after each broadcast), where each of these sub-tables has 10 (ten) related keywords according to a previously defined methodology.

:: First vote: 09/23/2010 and 10/03/2010

- All messages on Twitter, containing one or more keywords (manually generated by the researchers) from issues related to the coverage of the election campaign by the four major Brazilian Web portals (UOL, Terra, iG and G1), with a limit of 5 (five) terms every day, according to a previously defined methodology.

:: Second vote: between 10/08/2010 and 10/29/2010

Open Platform

NeoFluxo compiled databases that represent a broad scope of searches involving the 2010 Presidential election and its impact on the Internet. To widen the performance of these multiple possibilities to the most, access to all data is offered to the community through an open platform, under a Creative Commons license.

This open platform is made possible through an Application Programming Interface, or API. This means that any developer can access data through and establish relationships, create visualizations and thus allow researchers’ inferences on the subject.

Allowing the development of applications and access to data in order to extend the functionality of a system and contribute to its improvement is something rather common in tools such as Twitter and Facebook, but still something largely unexplored by the communication sector - which can now take advantage of available databases from the British newspaper The Guardian (www.guardian.co.uk / data-store) or the U.S. Government (www.data.gov). Far from positioning itself as a pioneer in Brazil, the NeoFluxo project hopes to be one among many similar initiatives in the country.

NeoFluxo - Terms and Conditions

1. NeoFluxo API

(A) NeoFluxo API is a set of features and programming patterns that allow access to the library of data collected by the Social Media Connected Observatory from the Teccred research group, a project financed by CNPq. The API provided by NeoFluxo require you to register before use, stating your name, email, website and purpose of access.

Below are the Terms and Conditions of Use for our API:

(B) When applying for an access ID you immediately agree to the Terms and Conditions of the NeoFluxo API.

2. Access to NeoFluxo’s content:

(A) As a user you must: provide complete and accurate information at the time of your request for an access ID. Your access ID must not be shared with third parties.

(B) If your request is accepted, you will receive a nontransferable, limited license to: access, copy, publish, distribute and display the content of NeoFluxo in your application.

(C) Your application must not: (i) contain material that is illegal or discriminatory (ii) promote or incite violence or illegal activities, and (iii) be able, in our sole discretion, to ethnic, sexist, homophobic, ideological or political partisan interpretations or promote these ideas.

(D) Access to NeoFluxo’s library does not grant you any rights on the data stored there.

(E) You must inform your published application electronic address to walterlima@pq.cnpq.br so it can be made available on our website.

(F) The application must contain reference to NeoFluxo as its source of data, show NeoFluxo’s logo and a link to our official homepage: www.neofluxo.net.

3. Termination

(A) Your access may be canceled or suspended at any time, for any length of time, and without notice if you commit a breach of the Terms and Conditions.

(B) In the event of termination of your access for any reason you should immediately cease the publication of your application.

4. Responsibility

(A) Your use of NeoFluxo’s content is at your own risk.

(B) Herein is excluded any liability for indirect, special or consequential damage caused by the access to NeoFluxo’s data. In addition, NeoFluxo is not liable for any losses.

(C) The present, also excludes liability for the consequences of any inaccuracy, interruption or errors in the content offered through this API.
